Emma Geairns 34, from Poole, Dorset who was told she had a ‘very sʟɪᴍ ᴄʜᴀɴᴄᴇ ᴏғ ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠɪɴɢ ɴᴀᴛᴜʀᴀʟʟʏ’ has become a mum of three in just one year, after having identical twins soon after her first-born daughter.
Emma gave birth to her twin boys, Noah and Arthur, just two days after her daughter Harlow’s first birthday in February 2021. The twins, now nine months old, and Harlow, who is 21 months, arrived after Emma was told she was ᴜɴʟɪᴋᴇʟʏ to get ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ ᴅᴜᴇ to the way her ᴄᴇʀᴠɪx ᴀɴᴅ ᴜᴛᴇʀᴜs ᴀʀᴇ ᴀʟɪɢɴᴇᴅ. She and her husband Jamie, 32, who live in Poole, Dorset, ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠᴇᴅ Harlow after a year of trying. She said:” We had actually decided to take a break from trying after a year and spend the summer drinking and having fun. It was just after that I found out I was ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ the first time.” After giving birth to Harlow, the couple assumed it would take a while for Emma to get ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ again, particularly after ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀs had explained the ᴘᴏᴛᴇɴᴛɪᴀʟ ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇᴘᴛɪᴏɴ ᴄᴏᴍᴘʟɪᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴs. But ʟɪᴛᴇʀᴀʟʟʏ the first time we had sᴇx after I gave birth, I was ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ again. ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀs that I had a very sʟɪᴍ ᴄʜᴀɴᴄᴇ ᴏғ ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠɪɴɢ ɴᴀᴛᴜʀᴀʟʟʏ. It was something that came up after ᴀ sᴍᴇᴀʀ ᴛᴇsᴛ, they said the way my ᴄᴇʀᴠɪx ᴀɴᴅ ᴜᴛᴇʀᴜs ᴀʀᴇ ᴀʟɪɢɴᴇᴅ made it very ᴜɴʟɪᴋᴇʟʏ. At the time, I took it in my stride and decided to focus on my career, but when I met my husband we decided we wanted to try.”
Emma says her friends now tell her story to offer hope to others hoping to ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠᴇ. She the woman who was told her probably ᴄᴏᴜʟᴅɴ’ᴛ have children, and then she had three in a year. However, the twins ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ was ɴᴏᴛ all smooth sailing. She said: “At first I assumed it was just one baby. Early on in the pregnancy, I started ʙʟᴇᴇᴅɪɴɢ, and I and the ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀs assumed I had had ᴀ ᴍɪsᴄᴀʀʀɪᴀɢᴇ. I went into the ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀs to basically make sure everything had passed and that I was ok. But they told me ɴᴏᴛ only did I have one healthy ғᴏᴇᴛᴜs, I had two!” Emma says Jamie didn’t believe her when she first told him. Because of ᴄᴏʀᴏɴᴀᴠɪʀᴜs, Jamie wasn’t allowed into the ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀs with her. She was so sʜᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ and ᴏᴠᴇʀᴡʜᴇʟᴍᴇᴅ that they told her had twins, when she thought she had ʟᴏsᴛ a baby. Emma said :” I came out to the car crying, and he was trying to comfort me, and say we could try again and everything. When I told him it was twins, he thought I was joking.”
Now the couple parents of three, they currently don’t have any plans to have any more children. Emma explains :”It’s really manic having three kids under two. It’s amazing, but it’s hard work. We’re very blessed to have three healthy children, and I feel so lucky and grateful.”
