A woman many assumed was ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ with twins gave birth to a ‘Hercules’ baby twice the size of an average newborn. Nicolina Newcome, from New Zealand, gave birth to Tobias thirteen pound son naturally without an ᴇᴘɪᴅᴜʀᴀʟ, at Waikato Hᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ in Hamilton. The ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀs still not able to explain why he was born so big.
Nicolina Newcombe, 33, and her husband Jamie, 27, were completely surprised by their new arrival Tobias, who was born a hefty six kilos in Waikato Hᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ, New Zealand, last week. The newborn weighed as much as a baby who is just shy of three months old and the family were forced to purchase an entire new wardrobe to clothe him. Mrs Newcombe’s ᴍɪᴅᴡɪғᴇ Anneka Reid described him as a ‘Hercules baby’ and told Stuff she had never seen a child naturally delivered at that size in her career before. Anneka said:” I remember looking at him on her ʙᴇʟʟʏ and he was just enormous… and when you pick him up he’s just so heavy.”
While some women who test ᴘᴏsɪᴛɪᴠᴇ to ᴅɪᴀʙᴇᴛᴇs have a greater chance of having a larger baby, this was not the case for Mrs Newcombe. She ᴛᴇsᴛᴇᴅ ɴᴇɢᴀᴛɪᴠᴇ to ᴅɪᴀʙᴇᴛᴇs during her ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ, so ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀs suspect her 175cm height might have played a small part in Tobias’ size. His father Jaimie is smaller in stature and is not believed to have contributed height-wise to his second son. The couple’s first child, Sage, 14, was a whole four pounds six ounces lighter than his brother and Mrs Newcombe didn’t require any ᴘᴀɪɴ ʀᴇʟɪᴇғ to have him. But she did opt for some help when Tobias’ true size was revealed in the ᴅᴇʟɪᴠᴇʀʏ ʀᴏᴏᴍ.
Mrs Newcombe said:” It got a bit much. I did have ɢᴀs and I did have ʀᴇᴍɪғᴇɴᴛᴀɴɪʟ… but I did not have an ᴇᴘɪᴅᴜʀᴀʟ. I think the fact that we didn’t know about his size was a blessing in a way because I think if we had have known… there would have been a lot of pressure to have a c-section.’ She never had any fears that he ‘wouldn’t fit’ because she was so surprised by his entrance into the world, but she did praise her ᴍɪᴅᴡɪғᴇ for remaining calm throughout the ʟᴀʙᴏᴜʀ.
